An American In Paris

Mat will be playing Principal Trumpet with the Australian Ballet and Orchestra Victoria for it’s run of ‘An American In Paris’ at the State Theatre till April 23 2022.

New album 'Grateful' out December 2

In this ever changing, uncertain world in which we live, to be grateful is one of the most powerful tools we have to bring joy to ourselves and others.  'Grateful' was composed with this spirit, to uplift and keep us headed on the right path.  The album features Jimmy Macbride from New York on drums, and Miki Yamanaka on piano, who is originally from Japan but now also lives in NYC.  The rest of the band consists of long time friends and colleagues, Carl Mackey on saxophones, Jordan Murray on trombone and Sam Anning on bass.

On April 30th 2019 Mat’s new album ‘Insurgent’ will be released, featuring the incomparable talents of Will Vinson (saxophone), James Muller (guitar), Sam Anning (bass) and Ben Vanderwal (drums).

This project enlists the talents of five heavyweights of the world Jazz scene. Featuring 100% original music, this album will showcase Australian music and some of its finest exponents.

The band hails from all over Australia and the globe. After many years based in NYC, Mat Jodrell and Sam Anning now reside in Melbourne. Will Vinson is originally from the UK, but has been based in NYC for 10+ years now. James Muller is based in Adelaide, and Ben Vanderwal in Perth. They will be all converging on South Australia and Wizard Tone Studios to combine their talents for a very special record.

In the realm of Australian music, specifically Jazz, this album promises to be a very important addition to the body of work. The musicians chosen here all exist on the world stage, and getting them all in one room at one time to document new music is a rare feat.

'Echoes Of Harlem' now available!

In 2015 Mat recorded with one of the greatest trios in Jazz today - Frank Kimbrough on piano, Jay Anderson on bass, and Lewis Nash on drums. The material chosen was eclectic, drawing on Mat's love of Louis Armstrong, Hank Jones, Harold Mabern, Jimmy Rowles, Ennio Morricone and more, as well as his own compositional skill. The session was recorded in the famous Sear Sound studios in midtown Manhattan and was mixed by Brian Montgomery and mastered by Randy Merrill at Sterling Sound, NYC.
